The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to question specific rulings from the official, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
