One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more material, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
